Schengen Country List: Overview for Travelers

Traveling across Europe without passport checks sounds like a dream, but for millions, it's a reality within the Schengen Area. This unique agreement allows seamless movement across multiple European countries, making it easier for tourists, business travelers, and residents to explore the region without border delays.

Whether you're planning a European adventure or just curious about which countries are part of this border-free zone, understanding the Schengen Area is essential. In this guide, we'll explore the countries that make up the Schengen Area and what this means for travelers.

What is The Schengen Area: Historical Background

The Schengen Area is a European region's list of 29 countries that have eliminated internal border controls, allowing passport-free travel among member states. It promotes economic cooperation and cultural exchange, enhancing tourism and business. Romania and Bulgaria will join on January 1, 2025, enabling free movement with other Schengen nations.

The concept of a borderless Europe emerged after World War II. The Schengen Agreement, signed on June 14, 1985, aimed to eliminate border checks, while the Schengen Convention introduced common visa rules. Schengen officially launched on March 26, 1995, and was integrated into EU law with the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1999.

Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Schengen?

Yes, if you're a Bangladeshi traveler applying for a Schengen visa for study, work, or business, travel insurance is mandatory. It ensures you can cover medical expenses in case of an accident, illness, or emergency hospitalization during your trip.

Your required travel insurance must provide at least €30,000 coverage for medical expenses and hospitalization, transport & repatriation in case of illness or accident, emergency dental care, and repatriation of mortal remains, and be valid across all Schengen countries.

However, if you hold a passport that allows visa-free entry to the Schengen Area (which does not apply to Bangladesh), insurance is optional but strongly advised. To explore Europe stress-free, getting Schengen travel insurance is always a smart choice!
